KASH KASH (2022)

Feature Documentary
A vital, cinematic snapshot of Lebanon and its chaotic state, where the flat rooftops high above the city streets become a hopeful haven for people practising the ritualistic pigeon sport Kash Hamam. Under the golden sun of Beirut, men stand on rooftops and shoot oranges at the sky. They do this to scare their pigeons, make them fly further, and make them stronger. They play the game Kash Hamam, where you have to lure the other players’ pigeons into your own pigeon loft. If you succeed, there’s Kash. And then you cut the feathers off the pigeon. Or feed it to the cats. Lea Najjar’s cinematic debut is a vital portrait of her hometown Beirut. A city hit by a corrupt elite, popular protests and one of the biggest explosions of the 21st century. But also a city where its hard-pressed citizens come together and form communities despite the chaos. On the flat rooftops high above the labyrinthine streets, we meet three men who have bonded over their love of pigeons – and a girl who dreams of entering the masculine game, Kash Hamam. A vivid, impressionistic snapshot from an already eminent director. ( Full Write Up )

THE DISASTER CANNOT BE CONTAINED (2022)

Short Film
Departing from the port of Rotterdam to that of Beirut, the Lebanese artist/filmmaker takes us on a journey through her feminist dream to work on a tugboat in the port of Beirut. A passion for ports and ships turns into a generational trauma due to the aftermath of the port Blast in 2020. The film offers an intersectional narrative and brings together questions of loss, distance, death, and the undead. ( MORE from Director Diana Al-Halabi )

OneBeat Lebanon convened 10 Lebanon-based musicians and 2 U.S.-based musicians (ages 19-35) for an intensive residency to collaboratively create original work and to develop civically engaged music initiatives. During the 3-week Beirut-based residency, 12 OneBeat Lebanon Fellows formed ensembles and wrote, recorded, produced, and performed genre-defying work, re-inventing existing music, led socially distant workshops for refugee youth, worked with collaborate artists and produced a final concert for the public (streaming and limited capacity). This video is an except from Ele ricité Liban, OneBeat Lebanon's final show at Metro al Madina in Hamra on July 31, 2021. OneBeat Lebanon is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and produced by Found Sound Nation. This program was produced with the generous support of the Public Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon.
